Waipara Hills announces partnership with The Court Theatre
Waipara Hills is delighted to announce the sponsorship of Christchurch’s The Court Theatre.
The Court Theatre is an icon of the arts in New Zealand and is the nation’s longest running, most successful theatre company.
Waipara Hills is now recognised as a Major Partner of The Court Theatre. The sponsorship agreement was signed on October 1st and both businesses are interested in a long term alignment.
A range of Waipara Hills wine will be served at all shows and events held at the theatre, beginning with the hit production, One Man, Two Guvnors, which opened on Saturday. One Man, Two Guvnors, is a major West End comedy, running at The Court Theatre until the 17th January 2015.
Waipara Hills Cellar Door Manager, Jenny Anderson, is absolutely thrilled to be associated with such a notable Canterbury institution. “The Court Theatre and Waipara Hills combining their creativity in the Canterbury limelight will, without doubt, enhance the opportunities and experiences for both patrons of The Court and our valued customers of Waipara Hills.” Jenny said.
“The Court Theatre is delighted to be partnering with leading New Zealand winery, Waipara Hills. We welcome Waipara Hills into our family of sponsors, many of whom, like Waipara Hills, are iconic local Canterbury brands. We look forward to many successful seasons together”, said Philip Aldridge, Chief Executive, The Court Theatre.
The sponsorship was negotiated by Hancocks Wine Spirit and Beer Merchants (Hancocks), the national distributor for Waipara Hills.
Hancocks is at the heart of the Canterbury recovery, as a predominant supplier into Christchurch’s new and dynamic hospitality sector. “Hancocks, along with Waipara Hills, is delighted to enter into this partnership with The Court Theatre. We believe that the arts and hospitality should be active partners. They are two areas of excellence in the new Christchurch and are integral to the dynamic new society we are building,” said Michael Bayly, South Island Regional Manager, Hancocks.

National Wine Shows recognise Waipara Hills Aromatic Wines
Waipara Hills are quietly developing a fine reputation for crafting award winning aromatic wines.
Medals won by Waipara Hills for their 2013 Pinot Gris and Riesling is assisting the Waipara Valley’s reputation as one of New Zealand’s finest aromatic wine producing regions.
Recent success at three local wine shows; the New World Wine Awards, New Zealand International Wine Show and Canterbury’s International Aromatic Competition, includes nine medals for Waipara Hills.
Waipara Hills Winemaker, Simon McGeorge is pleased to be part of the increasing success for aromatics hailing from the Waipara Valley. “These recent awards are great recognition for both Waipara Hills and the Waipara Valley region, which is producing aromatics of a great standard. It’s particularly gratifying to see our Riesling win gold at the New World Wine Show. It is a wine which has been a quiet achiever of ours for many years”, he said.
2013 was a dream vintage for aromatics, allowing Simon and his team to express the character of the Waipara Valley. Initially there was a cool spring, which slowed down the start of the season, but a warm and stable summer gave the best possible conditions for fruit and flavour development.

The 2013 Waipara Hills Waipara Valley Riesling was placed within the top 50 wines, from the 1,165 entries at the New World Wine Awards and was one of only four gold medals awarded to a Canterbury wine.
Chair of Judges, Jim Harré, was featured in a promotional video for New World, talking about the rich, powerful style of the Waipara Hills Riesling. To view the video please click here: http://youtu.be/4a5fyMjFdbI

The Winery Tour 2015
The Winery Tour 2015

Saturday 28 February  2015, Waipara Hills.

Early Bird Tickets on sale 28th of October.

Dave Dobbyn, Don McGlashan, Supergroove, Anika MoaCivic Events, promoter of the annual Winery Tour, is proud to announce the tour dates and line up for the 2015 run of the famous summer tour.

Headliners are two New Zealand music icons, Dave Dobbyn & Don McGlashan, performing together, joined by the legendary Supergroove and the Queen of the Winery Tour, Anika Moa.

Now in its 9th year, the Winery Tour has been streamlined. The 2015 Tour will play nine shows in nine wineries around New Zealand between late January and the start of March, with all shows played on a Friday or Saturday or the day immediately prior to a public holiday. It's one of the best line-ups, in the best winery venues, on the best days for enjoying a night out for fans. A full list of dates and venues is set out below.

It’s hard to explain or do justice to the importance and the influence of Dave Dobbyn and Don McGlashan in the canon of New Zealand music and culture, or to describe the esteem in which they are held by all Kiwis. They are supreme songwriters who have chronicled what it is to be a New Zealander. Over more than 30 years they have told the stories of our lives. Between them they have won five prestigious APRA Silver Scroll awards for Song of the Year. They have multiple hit albums between their solo releases, Th’ Dudes, The Front Lawn, DD Smash, Blam Blam Blam and the Mutton Birds. Backed by a crack band, expect this to be one of the most memorable sets in the history of the Winery Tour. And expect the hits – that’s if they can fit them all into a ninety-minute show.

Filling the middle slot are Winery Tour first timers, the legendary Supergroove. Formidable live performers, and featuring the mighty Che Fu, this eager band of young ruffians rewrote NZ music history with their debut album “Traction” – a trillion times platinum and spawning the hits Gotta Know, Scorpio Girls, You Freak Me, Sitting Inside My Head and Can’t Get Enough – and their incendiary live shows. They may not be swinging from the lighting trusses any longer, but Supergroove continues to be, quite simply, a musical force of nature.

Completing the three-artist line up is the official Queen of the Winery Tour Anika Moa. No artist better personifies what this Tour is about than this national treasure. She’s irreverent, relaxed, mostly barefoot, heart-warming and heart wrenching (often at the same time), supremely talented and endlessly entertaining. And she loves coming on the road with this tour. Anika Moa is the musical equivalent of a sneaky extra bottle of a favourite, multi-award winning, cheeky rose.

Dave and Don can’t wait to start the tour on 24 January.

Dave Dobbyn says "I'm so looking forward to playing the 2015 Winery Tour!  Great line up!  Don, our band and I have a great chemistry after performing together here, in Oz & in the UK.  It'll be such a pleasure to play in idyllic surroundings with relaxed summer audiences.  Let's rock together.”

“Dave and I duetted around the country last year on the Acoustic Church Tour, and then had a blast taking that tour to Australia and the UK. We’ve discovered that we love working together, so co-headlining Winery 2015 is a dream come true. We’ll get to carry on challenging each other and celebrating each other’s songs, but we’ll also get to plug in, turn the amps up and shout “How are you feeling, New Plymouth!” (Especially when we’re actually in New Plymouth).  I can’t wait” said Don.

Che Fu says hitting the road with Supergroove on the Winery Tour is a fantastic way to spend a Kiwi summer.

"This summer is gonna be leeeegend. So lookin’ forward to rockin’ stages with my SG broski's and of course with Anika, Don, and Yoda (Dave to everyone else). Yeee haaaaa!"

Anika Moa knows no better way to spend a February in New Zealand.

"I've been a part of the winery tour for the last 7 years. I've fallen in love, out of love, sung with all my might, drunk some of the finest wines, played with some of Aotearoa’s best musos and then some. It feels good to be back to sing and laugh with my kind of audience! It's also a good chance to play some of the new songs off my very new album set to be released in the New Year. Look out people. I'm back!"

Co-promoter Campbell Smith is looking forward to next year’s tour and promises concertgoers a unique and unforgettable experience:

”This tour is about great NZ music, great NZ wine and food, stunning locations and the warm and balmy nights of summer. It’s all about feeling good with friends and family, kicking off your shoes, having a wine or two, a dance and singing along. And for the 2015 Winery Tour we believe that we have one of the greatest line-ups of talent we have ever put together, to play in the best wineries in the country.

We have re-tooled the tour for 2015, focusing on fewer wineries and scheduling our shows on the best days of each week of the tour. We are sad to be not returning in 2015 to some tour spots that have hosted great shows in the past, but we hope that our fans from those places will find the closest Winery Tour show to them, buy tickets, pack their bags, book a motel or hit up friends for the couch and make a weekend away of it.

We are really excited to stage the first Winery Tour show at Mills Reef Winery in Tauranga, the only new venue on this run. The tour has enjoyed many memorable years at Wharepai Domain, but when the chance came to move to a stunning winery environment nearby, a venue that has its own great history of live shows, we had to take it.”

With nine shows on offer across nine spectacular outdoor venues, The Winery Tour is the best tour in New Zealand. The 2015 Tour will visit the following regions - NORTH ISLAND: Tauranga, Auckland, Matakana, Havelock North, Martinborough, Hamilton & New Plymouth; SOUTH ISLAND: Upper Moutere (Nelson) & Waipara (Christchurch).

Tickets (and bus/ticket packages) go on sale on Tuesday 28th October at an Early Bird price of $69 plus booking fee (ticket only). The Early Bird price will end on 30th November, the ticket price will then increase to $79 plus booking fee (ticket only) from 1st December.

One child under the age of 12 will be given free admittance when accompanied by one adult ticket holder.

Waipara Hills Equinox Riesling wins Champion Wine at Canterbury Wine Awards
Waipara Hills Equinox Riesling wins Champion Wine at Canterbury Wine Awards

Waipara Hills received further recognition for their Equinox range; taking out the Champion Wine Trophy at the annual Canterbury Wine Awards David Jackson Dinner held on Friday evening. The 2013 Waipara Hills Equinox Waipara Valley Riesling, a limited production wine, was the overall trophy winner, produced by Waipara Hills Winemaker, Simon McGeorge.

Simon attended the dinner with his wife, Olive; and was elated to accept the prestigious award.  “I’m hugely excited to receive the Champion Wine Trophy, particularly given the strong competition this year”, Simon said.  “This wine really shows why Waipara is the home of Riesling in New Zealand. Lifted and perfumed, yet with a depth that keeps you looking for the next character. The palate has weight and richness, but is also vibrantly fresh.”

Simon praised the hard work done by Jean-Luc Dufour, The Mound Vineyard Manager, and his vineyard team for producing the stunning fruit used in this wine. The Equinox Riesling has always been primarily sourced from the G Block at The Mound Vineyard; Waipara Valley. “This block has consistently made Rieslings with depth and structure for as long as I’ve been working with it. I love the life and freshness to the aromatics, the richness and structure in the palate and the lingering acidity that drives straight through the palate,” Simon said.

The Canterbury Wine Show is unique within New Zealand. Seven trophies are awarded to wines within certain food match categories. The 2013 Waipara Hills Equinox Waipara Valley Riesling received the Lane Neave Lawyers Seafood Class Trophy and Equinox also took out the Hill Laboratory Chicken Class Trophy with the 2013 Waipara Valley Pinot Gris. Judges explained the Riesling was a great match to white fish, “It matches well because of the purity, citrus freshness and elegant intensity.” The Pinot Gris was said to be, “A good style to match with poached style chicken and a lighter cooking style.”

Chair of Judges at the Canterbury Wine Awards, Jo Burzynska said, “The Waipara Hills Equinox Riesling 2013 impressed the judges with the great purity and intensity of its palate, with its fresh notes of lemon and lime and long mineral finish”.

At the fourth annual Canterbury Wine Awards; five gold, five silver and 18 bronze medals were awarded. “From our perspective it’s great to see a Waipara Riesling pick up the top honours, given the region prides itself on their Rieslings”, Gill Walsh from the regional body, Wines of Canterbury, said.

The 2013 Equinox wines have only recently been released; but are already creating a stir from receiving great reviews. 5 Stars were awarded at separate tastings by two prominent New Zealand wine reviewers; Michael Cooper and Raymond Chan for the Riesling and 4.5 Stars from each for the Pinot Gris.

#SauvBlanc - Waipara Hills Sauvignon Blanc - best Marlborough Wine of the Year CWSA

Press Release

15 May 2014

Waipara Hills wins Trophy for Best Marlborough Wine at CWSA Best Value Awards

Waipara Hills 2013 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc won the Best Marlborough Wine of the Year at the China Wine and Spirits Awards (CWSA) Best Value competition 2014.

Following much delight in receiving a Double Gold for the Sauvignon Blanc, it was the icing on the cake for Waipara Hills Winemaker, Simon McGeorge, who received the Trophy notification in the mail!

Simon McGeorge, Waipara Hills’ Winemaker, says he couldn’t ask for more. “Getting a Double-Gold and now a trophy at the CWSA is really exciting and a great honour. I look forward to showing this wine off over the next year, with this endorsement,” Simon said.

Simon describes the wine as a generous, lifted style of Sauvignon Blanc, with power and generosity. “I love this wine as it has lovely fresh characters with beautiful crunchy phenolics and bright acidity.”

This is the eighth consecutive vintage that the Waipara Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has received a Gold medal!

The Sauvignon Blanc is the only varietal in the Waipara Hills range, where the fruit is selected from outside the Waipara region. The grapes were picked from both the Wairau and Awatere valleys in Marlborough. The fruit combination from the two valleys produces a textural, concentrated wine with each valley adding a layer of complexity and flavour.

The CWSA is considered to be the biggest wine awards, likened to the wine industry’s equivalent of the Academy Awards in China and Hong Kong. The 2014 competition received a record number of 3,375 entries from 35 countries. Entries were tasted at price levels and medals were awarded to represent ‘Best Value’.

“The CWSA Organisation has been overwhelmed by the sheer quality of entrants for this year’s CWSA Best Value”, says Kelly England, President of the China Wine and Spirits Awards organisation. “The most highly regarded brands in the world understand that giving the ‘Best Value’ to buyers means a great deal.”

The Waipara Hills range is distributed by Hancocks (free phone 0800 699 463) and is available from specialty wine outlets and leading supermarkets nationwide. For more information on Waipara Hills and its selection of award-winning wines, visit www.waiparahills.co.nz.

Classic Hits Winery Tour at Waipara Hills enjoyed by many
Classic Hits Winery Tour Waipara Hills

A 30 degree day, followed by a balmy evening, was the perfect recipe for the 8th annual Classic Hits Winery Tour at Waipara Hills.

This year the concert was held on February 22nd, coincidently falling on the third anniversary of the devastating Christchurch Earthquake. It was a very poignant moment when concert co-promoter, Brent Eccles asked the crowd to raise their glasses in memory of those lost in the quake and to salute the future. Jordan Luck of the Exponents led a minutes silence immediately after, which produced utter stillness – it is not often you could hear a pin drop at a Classic Hits Winery Tour concert!

The concert drew families, couples, groups of friends; both local Cantabs and others from further afield; who comprised the 4,000 strong crowd, all ready to dance the night away. Many guests said they attended the Classic Hits Winery Tour at Waipara Hills every year, because they enjoyed the venue and loved how the line-up included old favourites; The Exponents along with new pop sensation; Stan Walker, who drew the younger generation and their families.

Many brought picnics and there was a wonderful atmosphere amongst guests, with the majority getting up to dance when Stan Walker and the Exponents performed. The Waipara Hills wine was enjoyed by many with the 2013 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc a top favourite, suiting the balmy evening.

Waipara Hills Cellar Door and café manager; Jenny Anderson said the evening was a success, “it was a great fusion of fun and festivity, supported by fabulous food and wine”.

Jenny is looking forward to hosting more concerts in the future at Waipara Hills, “We have such a perfect setting here at Waipara Hills, the winery provides a great backdrop against the scenic Teviotdale Hills and of course we love that these events bring more people to the Waipara district.

The next Classic Hits Winery Tour is planned for February 2015 with dates and performers set to be announced later this year. Keep an eye out on the Waipara Hills website for information www.waiparahills.co.nz
