Success for Waipara Hills at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards
As a leading aromatics producer, Waipara Hills has achieved great success at the recent Air New Zealand Wine Awards, with a Gold medal for the 2016 Waipara Hills Waipara Valley Pinot Gris and the 2015 Equinox Waipara Valley Riesling.

Waipara Hills also received Silver medals for the 2016 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, 2016 Waipara Valley Gewurztraminer and the 2015 Waipara Valley Chardonnay.

Waipara Hills winemaker Simon McGeorge was thrilled to receive two Gold medals and three Silvers, which he said was testament to all the great work done both in the vineyard and by the winery team.

“The 2016 Waipara Hills Pinot Gris showcases one of the best seasons I’ve seen in the Waipara Valley. To have a drier style Pinot Gris yet with such weight and richness, that retains lift and aromatic power, is just fantastic.”

The fruit quality was outstanding thanks to the harvest of 2016, described as “bountiful and beautiful” by Waipara Hills vineyard manager Jean-Luc Dufour. He said from spring to autumn, the heat, the rain and the dry was delivered at each stage just when it was needed.

In contrast, the 2015 harvest for the Equinox Riesling was not so stable. The late spring frost made for a smaller crop, but Jean-Luc said a lot of care was given throughout the season to the small amount of fruit on the vines. “It is very rewarding for all staff involved to get a Gold medal after such a lot of tender care went into producing this great wine.”

Simon said the 2015 Equinox Riesling has great mouth feel due to its focused acidity and ripe skin tannin. “It is filled out and complemented by the retained sweetness to make a multi layered wine, that has a real elegance about it too.”

The Air New Zealand Wine Awards has been running for more than 30 years, and is New Zealand’s premier wine competition, recognising excellence in winemaking. Following three days of judging more than 1,400 wines, 91 gold medals were awarded in this year’s Air New Zealand Wine Awards.

Chair of Judges and Master of Wine Michael Brajkovich said the most pleasing aspect of this year’s awards was the spread of gold medals across a number of varieties and regions.
The Winery Tour 2017
The iconic summer tour returns for its 10th year featuring Brooke Fraser, Bic Runga, and Benny Tipene

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, The Winery Tour will be returning to Waipara Hills on 18th February 2017. The all star lineup features two of New Zealand’s most successful artists of all time, Brooke Fraser and Bic Runga, and exciting newcomer Benny Tipene.

Their songs are woven into the very fabric of New Zealand life: Something in the Water, Sway, Better, Drive, Arithmetic, Something Good, Shadowfeet, Get Some Sleep, Deciphering Me and many, many more.

Los Angeles-based Brooke Fraser will return home to headline the 2017 Tour, following the release of her first career retrospective album “A Sides”, which will include her upcoming single “Therapy”. “The Winery Tour is quite simply a dream to play, there is no better way to tour New Zealand. I am looking forward to getting home to play all the favourites from my career so far to the best fans in the world” says Brooke.

Having played on the very first Winery Tour back in 2007, Bic Runga returns to tour the vines once again. Bic will be celebrating her induction into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame (the youngest ever inductee) and her brand new album “Close Your Eyes” (including the single of the same name), showcasing her interpretations of some of music’s most classic songs. Bic adds “I’m excited to rejoin the Winery Tour family, to hit the road again and to play all my songs and some of my favourite covers in the most spectacular venues”.

Opening the show will be Winery Tour newcomer Benny Tipene, an exciting new talent rapidly making a very big name for himself in NZ. Benny exploded onto the airwaves with four hits from his debut album ‘Bricks’ including the #1 platinum single “Walking on Water” and top ten gold single “Lonely”. Benny is busy completing his second album in time for the Winery Tour, an album which will include his brand new single “Where Love Comes From”.

Waipara Hills Official Wine Sponsor of The Food Show 2016
The Whirlpool Cooking Theatre at The Food Show
Waipara Hills is thrilled once again to be the Official Wine Sponsor of The Whirlpool Cooking Theatre at The Food Show 2016 in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

The 2016 series kicks off with the Christchurch Food Show from 8-10 April at Horncastle Arena, providing a weekend of fabulous tasting experiences and inspirational kitchen ideas.

This includes The Whirlpool Cooking Theatre; featuring some of New Zealand’s top chefs demonstrating their flare in the kitchen, and showcasing our Waipara Hills wines which have been perfectly matched to each dish.

Waipara Hills’ very own cellar door Chef Dylan Amyes recently enjoyed re-creating some of the Whirlpool Cooking Theatre dishes so that our team could find their perfect wine match, balancing the texture and flavours in each dish with the characteristics of the wine.

Dylan has taken five minutes out from his morning kitchen prep to share a few of his own thoughts and his passion for food and wine.

What’s your favourite dish to eat?
I love a good steak, but sometimes there's nothing better than the simple things. Even home-grown tomatoes on freshly baked bread is pretty hard to beat.  But my all time favourite would have to be slow roasted lamb shoulder.

What was your favourite food as a child?
I think I would have had pancakes with golden syrup every night for dinner if I could have. Ironically though, I do not have a sweet tooth at all any more.

What is your favourite time of the day at work?
I enjoy getting into the kitchen early before anyone else arrives, and having that time to plan how the day's going to go. It’s about enjoying the peace and quiet while you can!

What are your hobbies?
When I'm not working with food and wine, there's nothing I love nothing more than relaxing with it; because when you have good wine, good food and good company, life's good. But there's always time for a beer and rugby! I also do enjoy a bit of quiet time in the garden, peaceful after a busy day in the kitchen.

What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve ever eaten?
Nothing too crazy… kangaroo and crocodile; and offal, which I think we should all embrace a little more.

What was your original inspiration to cook?
I didn’t pick up cooking until a bit later in life, although I've always enjoyed it. In my younger years I always fancied my baking skills, and like most budding cooks I put it down to mum’s tuition and patience!

What is your favourite wine and food match?
I love a good Waipara Pinot Noir with a bit of our local duck or venison – you can't go wrong with that.

The beauty of being involved in the The Food Show is being able to share the passion our team at Waipara Hills has for food and wine, with like-minded people.

All of the wines featured during the Whirlpool Cooking Theatre at The Food Show can be sampled at the Waipara Hills stand (K10) alongside varietals from our three ranges Waipara Hills, Equinox and our cellar door exclusive, Soul by Waipara Hills.
2013 Waipara Hills Equinox Pinot Gris is Recommended by Cuisine
2013 Waipara Hills Equinox Pinot Gris
The 2013 Waipara Hills Equinox Pinot Gris has received 4.5 Stars and the prized ‘Recommended by Cuisine’ sticker.

Waipara Hills Equinox wines are of limited edition and lovingly hand-crafted to capture the unique essence of the Waipara Valley.

Waipara Hills winemaker, Simon McGeorge said “2013 was a superb season, producing fruit with full flavour, so it really shouldn’t be a surprise to see the wines that came out of that year looking so good now.

Most winemakers will have to choose whether to preserve the freshness of the young wine or push for richness, with the risk of losing vibrancy. Waipara has this classy ability to deliver both without fuss or fanfare.”

The Cuisine panel described it as “a fascinating, distinctive wine. Attractive flavours – pear, spice and nuts come swathed in a robe of toast. There is plenty of richness and sweetness, but focus is maintained by the fine line of acidity”.

“Layers of intrigue,” noted Cuisine’s John Belsham, while Jane Boyle said she liked the fact “it is so different.”

Cuisine is synonymous with its highly respected, independent wine tastings, and the results over the years have formed an invaluable buying guide, allowing readers to trust the familiar Recommended by Cuisine sticker.

This Cuisine recommended 2013 Waipara Hills Equinox Pinot Gris is available from all good fine wine retail stores.

2015 Waipara Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Awarded 5 Stars by Cuisine
2015 Waipara Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
The 2015 Waipara Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has been placed 9th in Cuisine Magazine’s recent NZ Sauvignon Blanc tasting. This fantastic wine was awarded five stars and the prized ‘Recommended by Cuisine’ sticker.

The team at Waipara Hills are delighted to be serving this award-winning Sauvignon Blanc at the Cellar Door and Café in the lead up to Christmas. Waipara Hills Head Chef, Dylan Amyes suggests matching it with fresh scallops, snow pea, tomato, fennel and almond with a coriander glaze – the perfect starter to enjoy on Boxing Day with friends.

Waipara Hills winemaker, Simon McGeorge said this year’s fruit was sourced predominantly from Marlborough’s Wairau Valley.

“We have created a powerfully aromatic Sauvignon Blanc, brimming with character and liveliness,” he said, adding it was a slight departure from the classic style of tropical notes and elegant and ripe greens.

“It’s vibrant and exuberant, combined with a nice mid palate richness and a long lingering finish.”

Cuisine is synonymous with its highly respected, independent wine tastings, and the results over the years have formed an invaluable buying guide, allowing readers to trust the familiar Recommended by Cuisine sticker.

“This is a lovely glass of wine. Flavour-wise, it’s a Christmas stocking full of different treats including jasmine, musk, minerality and lime. It has a seamless quality (“skilfully made,” noted John Belsham) and resolves in a long, dry finish.” – Cuisine Tasting Panel.

This Cuisine recommended 2015 Waipara Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is available from all good wine retailers.
